Aquatics Therapy for
Orthopedic Injuries

Orthopedic injuries are very common amongst competitive athletes as well as individuals who are high risk for joint injuries, such as the elderly. Aquatics therapy is highly recommended for the recovery of patients who have had orthopedic joint sprains, spinal cord injury, ankle injury, foot injury, surgeries and replacements (i.e. hip). Improving the patient’s mobility post an orthopedic surgery is imperative to prevent further consequence. Some patients are severely debilitated after orthopedic injuries because of the pain and surgery adds onto their inability to move. From lack of use, stiffness and loss of range of motion as well as the loss of flexibility may be a consequence. The water reduces the stress on the joints and muscles due to weightlessness, which allows rehabilitation to begin much sooner than if the patient was on land.

Call Us Today

Most sports related orthopedic injuries result from trauma to the bones, muscles and joints, which include the upper extremities as much as the lower extremities. A person’s musculoskeletal is involved in every movement like walking, typing, dancing, biking, even gardening. Common orthopedic injuries include:

  • Back and neck injuries
  • Overuse injuries
  • Fractures
  • Dislocations
  • Motion injuries
  • Torn ligaments
  • Torn muscles
  • Extremity pain
  • Arthritis

Treatment Goals

By the end of treatment the goal is to have our patients functioning at their maximum capacity. In order to accomplish this, our aquatic rehabilitation pool is fully adjustable with resistance jets that allow our patients to perform activities at different resistance levels as well as different massage levels. The adjustable pool increases the patient’s mobility in the joints allowing the patient to manipulate their comfort level. Through this process our patient’s pain level is greatly decreased with the massage hose system. The underwater treadmill we use increases in increments of 0.2 miles per hour (mph) to help our patients enjoy a personalized and comfortable pace as they receive all of their health benefits of exercise. However, the underwater aquatics treadmill does not overwork the patient’s joint, as is often the case during the pounding experienced on ground level surfaces. Additionally, considering many patients who have experienced an orthopedic injury are in danger of falling or having a recurring injury, the water prevents these risks. We would like our patients as well as potential patients to know that the benefits of aquatic therapy include, but are not limited to relaxation, improved joint mobility, pain relief, enhanced mobility, increased flexibility, strength, less weight and pressure on affected joints, and the strengthening of muscles and joints after surgery to prevent atrophy.
